D.D. Bears
FATHERʼS DAY TRIBUTE During the month of June, a board of hearts will be placed in the Narthex and GRCC members and guests are invited to write the names of their fathers, grandfathers, husbands, brothers, uncles or anyone who has been a father figure in their lives. Members and guests may also make a donation of a new teddy bear or a monetary donation in honor or memory of their loved ones. The bears are distributed to patients, mainly pediatric, at St Mary’s Hospital and to any-one who is having a difficult time and needs to know someone cares. A card that says God loves the recipient and that someone is praying for them and holding them close to their hearts accompanies each bear. For those who make donations or have made donations earlier in the year, there are cards on the Narthex table to place in the Father’s Day Cards of those you honor or to let other family members know you have made a donation in memory of your loved ones. D.D.ʼs Bears was started on December 22, 2002 in memory of David Daniel Taylor (known as D.D. by his family). He was the husband of Betty Taylor and the father of Larry and Dan Taylor. After retiring in 1987, he and Betty moved to Richmond and became active members of Gayton Road. David served as an elder for many years. In December of 1999, David was diagnosed with cancer and while a patient at Hen-rico Doctors Hospital, received a God Loves You Bear from the Youth of River Road Methodist Church. David was so touched by this gesture that he wanted to start a similar program at Gayton Road. Unfortunately, he died on March 27, 2000. Because David Taylor loved God and cared deep-ly for others, his family felt this was an appropriate way to honor his memory and spread the message of God’s Love to others. Over 1500 bears have been distributed by this church and by programs set up by other family members. In the past, D.D.ʼs Bears has also given bears to the residents of the Memory Unit at the Masonic Home, gifts to church shut ins, Angel Tree gifts, hats and mittens to the Henrico Christmas Mother, donation to the Autism Society of Virginia’s 5K walk/run, personal items and bears to nursing home residents, donations to Camp Comfort Zone, school clothes to children in need, gift cards for the Thanksgiving Basket, donations to Vacation Bible School, and phone cards to soldiers serving in Iraq.
A basket will be in the Narthex to collect the bears. Checks made out to GRCC with memo line D.D.ʼs Bears may be placed in the collection plate through the month of June. Thank you for helping GRCC leave a Heart Print of God’s Love on our community.
